Art Exhibiton
and
Sale of Paintings
Friday 17th - Sunday 19th
June 2011

A summer exhibition of 260 paintings by regional, professional and amateur artists will transform St Mary’s Church in Higham (Nr Colchester) into an Art Gallery on Friday 17th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June. Higham, in the Dedham Vale, is a few miles from John Constable’s home in East Bergholt and Flatford Mill. Financial support is needed for our picturesque 13th Century church and a percentage from the proceeds of the sale will go into the Church Fabric Fund.
Our 2009 summer exhibition raised just under £13,500 with nearly £3,360 going to the church.
For the participating artists, coming not only from Suffolk but from as far away as Norfolk and Hertfordshire, the bi-annual Higham Art Exhibition offers another marvellous opportunity to put their talents to the test and reach a wide and appreciative audience.
Among well known artists submitting works this year is Andrew King, an accomplished member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists. Andrew is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters and has work permanently on show in the House of Lords Art Collection. This year painter and tutor David Porteous-Butler from Mildon is exhibiting and among local artists participating is Hazel Theobold from Higham and members of the Dedham Arts Group.
Artist, George William Gill from Hertfordshire, has had success at exhibitions held by the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters for which he received the Windsor and Newton award for outstanding work. Artist Charles Debenham of Great Horkesley, who has work on show, is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London and also at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.
The 260 paintings in oil, watercolour and pastel depicting land/seascapes and still lifes will be on sale at Higham’s own Summer Exhibition with prices ranging from approximately £40 to £1,500.
This will be Higham’s eighth Art Exhibition which has become a popular event amongst Higham residents, visitors and artists alike. The beautiful interior and peaceful rural setting of the church is the perfect backdrop for an art exhibition. Our previous exhibition was a great success and we are hoping for an equally good event this year.
